Latvian Waffen SS

Veterans and supporters of the Latvian Legion of the wartime Waffen-SS marched to the Freedom Monument in the capital Riga in a tribute to their fallen comrades.

About 1000 people took part in a flower-laying ceremony to commemorate Latvians who fought in two Waffen SS divisions on the side of Nazi Germany in World War II, while hundreds of police kept angry protesters at bay. Participants in the ceremony, including 200 SS veterans, who are known as Legionnaires, sang patriotic songs under rows of Latvian national flags, while about 20 metres away several dozen demonstrators shouted insults and waved posters depicting scenes from the Holocaust.
