Presidential election race in Germany

Christian Wulff and Joachim Gauck are running as presidential candidates for German Head of State "Bundespräsident".

The German presidency is largely ceremonial but according to recent polls Christian Wulff trails the opposition Social Democrat and Green parties' candidate, Joachim Gauck, by a full 10 percent. But as the president is not elected by popular vote but chosen on the basis of proportional representation by the Federal Convention (Bundesversammlung), a body consisting of parliament (Bundestag) members as well as an equal number of members elected by state parliaments. Wulff is very likely to win, as the conservative parties will have the majority in the "Bundesversammlung".
